Until now, planting, selling or transporting marijuana in Chile has been a punishable offence which could have resulted in up to 15 years imprisonment.

Now, Chileans will be able to able to grow six plants at home, allowing the possession of up to 10 grams (0.35 ounce).

Markell Delaware marijuana decriminalization bill

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Helene Keeley, D-Wilmington, allows Delawareans to possess up to an ounce of marijuana and use the drug privately without facing criminal sanctions, although police can confiscate the drugs.

Criminal penalties for simple possession will be replaced with a $100 civil fine. The law takes effect six months after Markell’s signature.

Jamaica Decriminalizes

Jamaican lawmakers have passed an act to decriminalise small amounts of marijuana and establish a licensing agency to regulate a lawful medical cannabis industry on the island.

After several hours of debate legislators in the lower house on Tuesday gave final passage to drug law amendments that make possession of up to 2oz (56.6g) of marijuana a petty offence that would not result in a criminal record. Cultivation of five or fewer plants on any premises would be permitted in Jamaica, where the drug has long been culturally entrenched but illegal.

Alaska Legalizes

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration discovered in a new pair of studies that using marijuana before getting behind the wheel puts you at a lower risk for a car crash than drinking alcohol before driving.

The results emphasize that the amount of THC (the main active ingredient in marijuana) in a person’s body doesn’t correlate with their level of impairment like blood alcohol does, with the report’s authors pointing out that it is difficult to predict how most psychoactive drugs are absorbed and eliminated from the body since they are “chemically complex molecules,” according to the Chicago Tribune.
